Understanding Indonesian cultural norms helps visitors show respect and avoid unintentional offense during their stay. The most significant cultural consideration involves proper hand usage.
The left hand is traditionally considered unclean because it's associated with personal hygiene activities. This cultural norm has important practical implications for daily interactions. Always use your right hand for shaking hands, giving or receiving objects (including money), touching others, or eating.
When your right hand is occupied, make an effort to switch items to your right hand before presenting them to others. If circumstances require using your left hand, it's polite to acknowledge this by saying "Maaf, tangan kiri" (Sorry, left hand), which demonstrates cultural awareness and respect.
Additional gestures to avoid include pointing directly at people with your index finger - instead, use your thumb or gesture with your whole hand. Avoid touching someone's head, as it's considered the most sacred part of the body. In social situations, maintaining appropriate eye contact is important, but avoid staring, which can be perceived as confrontational or disrespectful.
