Are There ATMs Available In Rural Areas Of Indonesia?

ATMs are widespread and easy to find in Indonesia’s cities, airports, malls, and tourist hotspots. However, in rural areas, small towns, remote islands, and off main streets, ATMs can be scarce or unavailable. If you are traveling to less-developed regions, it’s wise to withdraw enough cash in advance from urban centers or airports.

Major Indonesian banks such as Bank Mandiri, BCA, Danamon, Maybank, and Permata Bank operate most ATMs, and these usually accept international Visa and Mastercard cards. While some international banks like HSBC and Standard Chartered also have ATMs in Indonesia, there are no local banks participating in the Global ATM Alliance, so you may incur foreign transaction fees.

ATMs in Indonesia generally accept 4- or 6-digit PINs, but always check with your home bank regarding overseas withdrawal fees and daily limits. In truly remote areas—such as small islands, regional bus stops, or village interiors—cash is essential, as card payments and ATMs may not be available.
