Respecting local customs is key to positive interactions throughout Uzbekistan, a predominantly Muslim country with rich traditions. In both urban and rural settings, modest dress is encouraged, especially when visiting mosques or religious sites. For women, this means covering shoulders and knees, while men should avoid wearing shorts in sacred places.
In rural areas and traditional homes, customs are often observed more strictly. It’s polite to remove your shoes before entering a home, and when dining, use your right hand for eating and for giving or receiving items. In more remote villages, staying in guesthouses or homestays offers a deeper immersion into local culture, where you may experience traditional hospitality firsthand.
Greeting etiquette can also vary: a handshake is common between men, but when greeting women, a nod or placing your hand over your heart is considered polite. By being mindful of these customs, travelers can foster mutual respect and enjoy a more authentic cultural exchange.
