The official language is Azerbaijani or "Azeri", a Turkic language. In 1994 it was estimated that some 82% of Azerbaijan's citizens speak Azerbaijani as their first language. In addition, 38% of Azerbaijanis speak Russian fluently to accommodate Russian domination of the economy and politics.
The Azerbaijani language belongs to the 'Oghuz' or 'Western Turkic' cluster within the larger family of Turkic languages. This linguistic group encompasses Anatolian Turkish, spoken in Turkey, and Turkmen, spoken in Turkmenistan. Divergences in dialect between Azerbaijani and Anatolian Turkish are believed to stem from influences of both Mongolian and Turkic origins.
Despite these linguistic discrepancies, speakers of Anatolian Turkish and Azerbaijanis often find mutual intelligibility when conversing, provided they communicate attentively. Azerbaijani, as a spoken language, comprises numerous dialects. Over time, starting from the nineteenth century, Russian-controlled Azerbaijan witnessed an influx of Russian loanwords, particularly in technical jargon, along with the adoption of certain grammatical and lexical structures from the Russian language. Simultaneously, Persian vocabulary found its way into Azerbaijani spoken in Iranian Azerbaijan. Despite these variations, these linguistic variants have retained a level of mutual comprehensibility.
