The U.S. Department of State advises American citizens to reconsider travel to Pakistan due to terrorism and the potential for armed conflict. It has issued a "Do Not Travel" advisory for certain high-risk areas, including the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), the former Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), and regions bordering Afghanistan and the Line of Control. These areas face threats from active terrorist and insurgent groups that have targeted civilians.
In other parts of the country, including major cities, there is still a risk of terrorism and sectarian violence. The U.S. government places restrictions on its personnel traveling in Pakistan, often requiring armed escorts and armored vehicles for their safety. U.S. citizens are advised to remain vigilant, especially in public places, and to avoid large gatherings or demonstrations. Due to these security concerns, the ability of the U.S. Embassy and Consulates to provide emergency consular services can be limited, particularly for dual U.S.-Pakistani citizens.
