Where Can I See Orangutans Or Proboscis Monkeys In Their Natural Habitat?

The best place in the world to see orangutans and proboscis monkeys in their natural habitat is the state of Sabah in Malaysian Borneo. Both species can be spotted in the wild, though visiting a sanctuary offers guaranteed sightings.

For Orangutans: These gentle "people of the forest" can be seen in both wild and semi-wild settings.

  • Sanctuaries: For a guaranteed and up-close encounter, the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre near Sandakan is a must-visit. Here, you can observe rescued orangutans during their feeding times in a protected rainforest reserve. While not entirely wild, it provides an incredible opportunity to see them and support conservation efforts.
  • In the Wild: The Kinabatangan River is a prime location for spotting truly wild orangutans. With a population of over a thousand in the area, taking a river cruise with an experienced guide offers a high chance of seeing them as they move through the dense forest canopy. Other excellent locations for wild sightings, typically requiring more dedicated trekking, include the Danum Valley Conservation Area and the Tabin Wildlife Reserve.

For Proboscis Monkeys: These unique monkeys, known for their large noses and pot bellies, are endemic to Borneo and are a fascinating sight.

  • Sanctuaries: The Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary, also near Sandakan, provides the easiest and most reliable way to see these animals up close. The sanctuary has feeding platforms that attract large troops of proboscis monkeys, allowing for amazing photographic opportunities.
  • In the Wild: The Kinabatangan River is also a fantastic place to see wild proboscis monkeys. They are very social and are frequently spotted in large groups along the riverbanks, especially during evening river cruises.
