Things to Know Before Entering Korea, South

Tourists should note some information about K-ETA to be well-prepared before entering Korea. Read our guide, summarized below, carefully to have a smooth journey to discover the Land of Kimchi.

Visa & Entry Requirements

  • Travelers from K-ETA-eligible countries must obtain a K-ETA before departure. Airlines may deny boarding if your K-ETA has not been approved.
  • Your passport must be valid for at least six months from the date of entry and must be the same passport used to submit your K-ETA application.
  • An approved K-ETA is linked electronically to your passport; however, travelers should still keep a copy of the approval for reference.

K-ETA Types

  • Tourist K-ETA: Designed for travelers visiting South Korea for tourism, such as sightseeing, holidays, cultural experiences, or visiting friends and family.
  • Business K-ETA: Intended for visitors for short-term business activities, including meetings, conferences, market visits, or professional events.

Conditions of the K-ETA

  • You may enter Korea multiple times within the 3-year validity period with the K-ETA.
  • Most travelers may stay in Korea for up to 90 days per entry, though this may vary by nationality.
  • The K-ETA is for short-term visits only; it does not permit employment, long-term study, or residency.

Travel Insurance

  • Travel insurance is not mandatory for K-ETA approval or entry into South Korea. However, due to the high cost of medical care and unexpected travel disruptions, travel insurance is strongly recommended.

FAQs about entering Korea, South

1.

Do I need a visa to enter South Korea?

If you are from a country eligible for the K-ETA, you do not need a traditional visa for short-term visits. Instead, you can apply for a K-ETA online. Make sure to check your eligibility and submit your K-ETA application before your trip, as airlines will only allow boarding once your K-ETA has been approved.

2.

How long does it take to process a K-ETA?

Processing time depends on the speed you choose. We currently offer three processing options:

  • Normal Processing: Typically completed within 3 days. This option works best for travelers applying ahead of their trip and who have flexible timelines.
  • Urgent Processing: Completed within 48 hours with an additional service fee, suitable for travelers who need faster approval.
  • Super Urgent Processing: Designed for last-minute travel needs, this option provides approval in under 24 hours and also requires an extra expedited fee.

3.

Do I need to print out my K-ETA to enter South Korea?

No, printing it out is not required. The passport you used to apply is electronically connected to the Korea Electronic Travel Authorization, or K-ETA. Immigration officials will use their system to confirm it when you get to South Korea.

However, it is still recommended to carry a printed copy or a digital backup, especially because airline staff may ask for proof before boarding.

For travelers who prefer accessing their digital documents instantly upon landing, using a travel eSIM can ensure stable connectivity and easy access to your K-ETA file.

4.

Is travel insurance mandatory for entry to South Korea?

No. Travel insurance is not required to obtain a K-ETA, nor is it checked by immigration officers upon arrival.

However, since medical expenses in Korea can be high, it is strongly recommended to carry a policy that covers emergencies, hospitalization, accidents, and travel disruptions. Insurance also helps support your trip in case unexpected issues arise during your K-ETA-based short stay.

5.

How can I check my K-ETA application status?

You can check your K-ETA application status through the following methods:

  • Log in to your account: Your dashboard will display the most up-to-date status of your K-ETA application.
  • Check your email: We send regular email notifications as your application moves through each stage, so reviewing your inbox is recommended.
  • Submit a status check request: If you need additional assistance, you may submit a request through our status-check form, and our support team will help verify your application status.

6.

Can I use the same K-ETA if I renew or replace my passport?

No. A K-ETA is digitally tied to the passport you used when applying. If your passport is renewed, damaged, lost, or replaced, you must submit a new K-ETA application before traveling.
