Entering Kenya in 2026

Kenya now operates a fully digital Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) system, making entry procedures simpler for international visitors. With an approved eTA, travelers can arrive in Kenya with their travel authorization already issued by the government, ensuring a smoother arrival process.

Things to Know Before Entering Kenya

Traveling to Kenya is an extraordinary experience, but the following few key points will help ensure a seamless trip.

Visa & Entry Requirements

  • All travelers to Kenya are required to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) before arrival, unless they fall into specific exempt categories such as citizens of East African Community (EAC) countries, permanent residents, or accredited diplomats.
  • Depending on your travel purpose, supporting documents such as hotel reservations, flight details, or an invitation letter may be required.
  • A passport needs to contain at least two blank pages and be valid for at least six months after the date of entry.

Kenya eTA Types

  • Tourist eTA: For travelers visiting Kenya for tourism, sightseeing, holidays, or visiting friends and family.
  • Business eTA: For travelers visiting Kenya for short-term business activities such as meetings, conferences, and professional events.

Conditions of the Kenya eTA

  • The Kenya eTA is valid for 90 days from the date of issue, and travelers must enter Kenya within this period.
  • Upon arrival, travelers can stay for up to 90 days with a single entry.
  • The eTA may only be used for the declared short-stay purpose, such as tourism or business. It does not permit employment or long-term residence.
  • Carry a copy of your eTA approval during your stay, as it may be requested by authorities.

Travel Insurance

  • While not required for eTA approval, comprehensive travel insurance is strongly recommended.
  • A suitable plan should cover medical treatment, emergencies, evacuation, and travel disruptions—recommended for short-term visitors entering under the eTA.

FAQs about entering Kenya

1.

What is the Kenya Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA)?

The Kenya Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA), which has replaced the traditional visa system for eligible nationalities, is a digital document that most international travelers must have to enter Kenya. An eTA grants permission to travel and is authorized by the Government of the Republic of Kenya.

2.

How long does it take to process a Kenya eTA?

The processing time for a Kenya eTA depends on the service option you select. We currently offer three processing speeds:

  • Normal Processing: Most Kenya eTA applications are processed in approximately 3 days. This option is suitable for travelers who apply in advance and have flexible timelines.
  • Urgent Processing: Your eTA is processed within 48 hours for an additional fee. Ideal for travelers who need faster approval.
  • Super Urgent Processing: For travelers who need their travel authorization as quickly as possible, the super urgent option allows the eTA to be issued in less than 1 day. This fast-track service includes priority review and is ideal for last-minute trips.

3.

How many times can I enter Kenya with the eTA?

Kenya eTA is granted for a single entry only to travelers for brief visits for business, tourism, or transit purposes. To return to Kenya, visitors who have already left the country need to obtain a new visa.

4.

How long is a Kenya eTA valid for?

The Kenya eTA is valid for 90 days after it is issued; therefore, you have to travel to Kenya within those three months. When entering Kenya, the stay period begins to be calculated from the date of arrival, which is no more than three months.

5.

Do I need to print my Kenya eTA?

We recommend carrying both a printed copy and a digital copy of your approved eTA. A printout is helpful if your device runs out of battery, while a digital version lets you access it instantly when needed. For reliable access to your email or cloud files on arrival, it's recommended to use a travel eSIM to stay connected right away.

6.

When should I apply online for the Kenya eTA application form?

To provide adequate processing time, it is advisable to submit your Kenya eTA application at least 1-2 weeks prior to your intended departure date. Applying ahead of time helps you prevent last-minute delays or issues at the border and guarantees that your visa will be ready.
