Accessing the world-renowned Sipadan Island for diving requires planning due to strict conservation rules. Direct tourist stays on Sipadan are not permitted; instead, divers must stay at a resort on one of the nearby islands, such as Mabul or Kapalai, or in the mainland town of Semporna.
The key to diving at Sipadan is securing a permit. These permits are limited to a small number each day to protect the marine ecosystem and are allocated to the local dive resorts. To obtain one, you must book a diving package with an accredited resort, which will then arrange the permit and boat transportation to Sipadan for you.
