Things to Know Before Entering Sri Lanka

Traveling to Sri Lanka is an exciting experience, and understanding a few key ETA-related requirements will help ensure a smooth and hassle-free entry.

Visa & Entry Requirements

  • Most foreign travelers must obtain a Sri Lanka ETA before boarding their flight.
  • Your passport must remain valid for at least 6 months from your arrival date.
  • A valid ETA approval notice (printed or digital) must be shown at immigration.
  • A confirmed return or onward flight may be requested by the government.

ETA categories

  • Tourist ETA
  • Business ETA
  • Transit ETA

 Special Rules

  • With immediate effect, nationals of China, India, Indonesia, Russia, Thailand, Malaysia, and Japan are eligible for free visas.
    • Applies to all passport types: Diplomatic, Official, Public Affairs, Service, and Ordinary passports are all eligible under this free-visa scheme.
    • These travelers MUST still apply for an ETA, but the government fees are waived.
    • Granted a 30-day free stay with double entry allowed within 30 days.
    • Extensions beyond 30 days require payment of the applicable visa fee.
  • Travelers from Cameroon, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, and Ghana must apply for an ETA through a Sri Lankan sponsor at the Department of Immigration & Emigration's head office in Sri Lanka.

Conditions of ETA

  • Tourist ETA allows double entry with a stay of up to 30 days.
  • Business ETA permits short business activities (meetings, negotiations, events).
  • Transit ETA is intended for travelers who stay less than 48 hours in Sri Lanka.
  • Overstaying your ETA is prohibited and may result in penalties.
  • Each traveler (including children) needs to hold a separate ETA.

Health & Travel Insurance

  • Travel insurance is not a mandatory document for Sri Lanka. But it is highly recommended for travelers because emergency medical care and evacuation are expensive.
  • Most visitors to Sri Lanka do not need to meet any health criteria in order to enter; however, those coming from or passing through a place where yellow fever is a danger must have a certificate of immunization against the disease.
  • No other vaccination or health screening is required for ETA entry.

ETA Extension Rules

  • You may apply for an online extension via the official ETA/visa extension portal.
  • Short Visit Visa extensions may be granted in three consecutive stages, allowing a maximum stay of up to 270 days from the date of arrival (30 days initial stay → 60 days first extension → 90 days second and third extensions).
